Today in class we started our musical unit. To kick off the unit we are watching "Moulin Rouge!". This is musical about the production of a show, how they get it funded and the events that happen while it is being created. I thought the way this movie used many different songs was very interesting. With most musicals I have seen the songs have been specifically written for that movie, but with this movie they used songs that weren't specifically written for this movie. For example, "Your Song" by John Elton. The songs are incorporated very well, fitting the movies plot as if they were written for the movie. I was very surprised when I heard these songs because I knew they came out before the movie. I have never seen any musical like this before. It is a very smart idea, since most of the audience will already know the songs, and will enjoy being able to recognise them while they are watching the movie! Overall I think the plot of the movie is very comedic but also heartbreaking at times. It definently has a lot of twists and turns and suspension builds throughout it. I have watched around half of the film so far, and I am enjoying it! Next lesson we will finish the movie. So far I am very excited to look in musicals, since one of my passions is music. I am excited to see how we are going to write and create our own musicals.
