Artistic Statement
Purpose:
The purpose of this film is to entertain the audience, while also displaying my understanding of a western film. The film should be able to be recognised as a western film, through the elements of mise en scene of western films that I incorporate and by using aspects of the iconography of western films in my film. The audience should enjoy the film, finding that it is interesting and enjoyable to watch, while still being able to be recognised as a western film. Not only will the film display my group and I’s knowledge on western films, but also our knowledge about creating a film in general. It should show good filming and editing skills. Overall the purpose is to show my knowledge on western films and film making while entertaining the audience.
Color Scheme:
Western films are set in the Old American West, where is very dry and hot. Because of this, you will notice that many of the shots taken in the west of America, or are representing the Old American West, are warm toned. To emulate this effect in our film when editing, my group and I will change the tone, making it warmer. Furthermore, we can also add a light sepia filter which is often used in western films.
Tone:
The tone of this film will start out as sad, progress into anger and suspense, then end with a sad tone. The anger and suspense will show during the fight scenes, while the sad scenes happen at the start and end and flashback when it is mentioned that Wyatt lost his daughter. Altogether, the main tone will be sad and emotional, as the story follows a fight for justice about a sad event, that ends with an unsettling ending.
Cinematography:
Using a range of shots, from wide shots to POV shots, we will create our film. By using more than one type of shot this will help to make our film more interesting. If our film was filmed only using one or two types of shots it would be quite boring. Long and wide shots will be used when showing the scene or showing characters moving. Close-ups will be mostly used when showing detail and adding intensity to a certain part of our film.
Development:
The film shall start out sad when the audience is informed that Wyatt has lost his daughter. On the other hand, the emotion may change to sympathy if they believe Dolores had nothing to do with the murder, and believe she is being attacked for no reason. The story then progresses on to be filled with angry and suspense as Quentin and Wyatt start to fight. Depending on who the audience is hoping to win, since who the “good guy” in this film is debatable, if they are supporting Quentin, they may feel some amount of hope when Quentin starts to win. But, they are again let down when Wyatt ends up winning. On the other hand, the audience could support Wyatt, and feel hopeless when Quentin is starting to lose, but feel relieved and happy when Wyatt wins. Either way, throughout this film the audience will go on an emotional journey. As the film develops so shall their emotions.
