Artist Statement
Purpose:
The purpose of my film is to entertain the audience, but also to demonstrate my knowledge in Mise En Scene. Firstly, Mise En Scene will be used recognised as a musical, displaying my understanding of musicals. It should include singing in the film to signify it is a musical, but the music must be incorporated into the plot. Furthermore, the film my group and I are making is also an adventure and action film, the audience should also recognise that through Mise En Scene. By incorporating aspects of action and adventure Mise En Scene our film should become recognisable as action and adventure. For example, by all the characters having very monotone expressions and wearing all black, it creates an intense mood, rather than and light and romantic mood which might be seen in comedies or romantic films. Additionally, using props, such as the detective board we are creating, will help the audience to recognise the genre of the film. The film needs to entertain the audience, and not bore them. The Mise En Scene will help the film to be more entertaining because it will be easier to understand what it happening in the film, but also by editing the film well it will become more enjoyable. There shouldn’t be any parts of the film that aren’t edited well that distract the audience from simply watching the film. If all these aspects are meet, the purpose of the film will be completed, the audience should be entertained and enjoying the entertainment, while the film should also display my understanding and knowledge on Mise En Scene.
Color Scheme:
Since our film is an action and adventure film, the color scheme will be mostly dark colors. The characters will all be wearing black. Furthermore, there will be a filter added to the film to make the film tinted a slight dark blue color. This will increase the intensity of the mood. Furthermore, the exposure will be turned down. This can be recognised to be done in many crime TV shows or movies, or dystopias that we are trying to emulate.
Tone:
The tone of this film is overall very intense and angry. Since the film is about revenge, most of the time everyone is very angry. However, there are a few scenes that are sad. For example, the flashback of Montagne or when Montagne dies. By having the sad mood in the film as well as the intense and angry mood it will give it a good balance. The film should have no happy or joyful moods in it. By having having the characters smile or having the characters wear colorful clothing can throw off the audience to become confused about the genre for the film. Sometimes, throwing a joke into a serious film can be a good addition, however for our film since it is so short the tone will stay consistent. This will help to add to the Mise En Scene of our film. Overall, the main tone of the film will be very intense with some sad parts as well.
Cinematography:
In this film, there is a lot of action and fight scenes. For a fight scene to be interesting and for the audience to understand what is going on we will need to shoot various shots of the same scene. By doing so, the audience will get a better view of the situation. Furthermore, we will also do this throughout our film to make it more interesting. For example, when Glaz is walking down the hallway, we are going to take multiple shots of him walking. This is because having just one shot works, but having multiple angles will make it smoother and more entertaining. Additionally, we are also going to include establishing scenes for each location. This way the audience understands the setting in which we are at, this also creates smoother transitions rather than just switching locations and going straight to the action. The cinematography in the film is very important to keep the film entertaining and interesting.
Development:
The entire film is very intense and dark, however there is some build up. In the start the film is very sad, since the students are struggling and the students are in deep pain. However, this quickly transitions into anger, with the resistance wanting revenge. It becomes increasingly more intense as there are the fight scenes, but then suddenly becomes sad again. This creates a good contrast and break from the many intense fighting scenes. This is when Montagne dies and is singing “Bohemian Rhapsody”. This is a very important scene, since Montagne does manage to save the day. However it is a very quick development in emotions, going from intense, to sad, to a small amount of euphoria when she shuts the electricity down saving the students. However, the mood yet again develops changing back into suspense and intensity when Capitao kills his team mates and becomes a dictator. Overall, this film develops very quickly throughout the film, however the entire film has a very intense feeling to it.
Vision For the Film:
Personally, I want this film to be able to capture the audience. I want the audience to not think about the production of the film, or aspects of the editing when watching it. Instead just the plot of the film and all the characters. I want the film to leave the audience wanting more, since the end is a bit of a cliffhanger. The film should emulate the feel of many dystopia films. I want the film to be smooth and look somewhat professional. To have it like this when filming my group and I will have to be very detailed. Furthermore, the editing must be done very well. Using certain effects and using our different shots in the right order the film should be very smooth. We shouldn’t over do the effects, as that could end up confusing the audience. I want this film to be very well made and smooth.
