Today in class my group and I went location scouting for locations for our film. We already knew we are going to film the bulk of our film at the hiking trail (Photo 2) near school, but we wanted to find the spot within the trail where we can film. We found two possible locations, the first one, below labeled as Photo 1, is an opening which is ideal of our film. The only concern we have is that from certain angles you can see the fence, which doesn't fit the theme of a western film, and the grass is very vibrant and green there, which it wasn't like in the Old American West. Another spot which has less grass and no fencing or any modern instalments around, is further up the trail. During class we didn't have time to go up there and look at it, but a member of my group as been there before and is going again to check it out tomorrow. We will use either of these locations for filming the major parts of our film. There are a couple scenes located inside a room, which we are going to film at school, but the rest of the scenes will be filmed at the hiking trail.
Today in class we finished up our production plan and started out storyboards. Over the weekend we all finished our western portfolio so that now we can focus on our production plan. We have a total of 61 shots in our shot list, so we have a lot of story boarding to do. We have split the work up evenly, below I have inserted a picture of some of the storyboards. By doing the storyboards I can now start to see our film come to life! We have tried to include as many shots as needed to create a detailed and interesting film, as if you have the same type of shot throughout the entire film it can get a bit boring. Drawing some of the shots is a bit challenging, but this storyboard will defiantly help us when we are filming. Next class we plan to start our artistic statements, ready for us to start filming on Friday! We will film over the weekend and the next week as well, so we are ready to screen our film on March 8th.
Today in class my group and I started our production plan. This plan includes our shot list, artistic statement, equipment list, shooting dates and props and costumes. My group will create everything together in the production plan besides the artistic statement, we all have to write our own. We assigned each other certain areas of the plan to focus on, I made the shooting dates. With our film due very soon, right after this production plan is due, we are working on our film everyday. We are using the last 5 days to edit, the rest of the time will be spent on filming. Our shot list isn't done yet, but so far it seems like we are going to have many shots, so we will need to be very efficient when filming. I am going to acting in our film as one of the main characters! I am very excited to keep working on our film. It is slowly starting to come to life now and I can't wait until we can go out and film the actual film after we finish the production plan.
Camera learning class, no reflection today, check "Class Notes" tab for my notes from today.
Today was a short class, so I spent my time working on my western portfolio. I have started my introduction to western films, which I imagine will take the longest to create, which is why I am doing it first. I am using my notes I took in class on the day we watched a presentation on western films to help me write the introduction. I have found this very useful so far. I am trying to introduce western films without going into too much detail, since I will need to input some of that detail into my mise en scene part of my western portfolio. At the end of class we were put into our groups, I am in Duncan's group making a film based on Game of Thrones. I am very excited to start, James and Conrad are also in my group. I have already discussed to Duncan about how we are going to create the movie, and since I am open to acting we are thinking of changing one of the main characters to a female role. I haven't read his script yet, but I read it when he was creating it, and from what I have seen I like it a lot and can't wait to get started! Overall today's lesson has made me anticipate creating the actual film and the process of doing so!
Today in class I continued working on my script. I have been working on it for the last couple lessons, but today I finally finished both of them and turned them in! I am happy with my final products. I didn't add much today, I mostly reviewed and took advice from my peers and my teacher for improvements before submitting it. I think my script shows a good balance of concepts from the original script, while still being unique. I am excited to see some other scripts of my peers and to see which scripts are chosen. Next I want to start working on my Western Portfolio, starting with the introduction. I am excited about getting in my group and starting the project! Overall today I was productive and got my work done, I am very excited to see what it is to come!
In class today we continued our work on our scripts. I am now finished with both my scripts, but I still need edit my second script. I am going in and replacing some of the words I used with words from cowboy language to help me incorporate more western iconographic aspects into my film. I am so far very happy with my second script, I have kept the concept of Taken where there is a father finding his daughter who has been trafficked, but I changed the setting and, like I mentioned before, the language of the characters. For example, instead of the first scene occurring in a hallway of a mansions, I changed it to the back of a bar, and the fight scene is in the woods instead of a basement. This adds a western aspect to the film, because having it in a mansion, like the movie. All I need to do now is some final editing and reviewing of my script before I'm reading to turn it in on Friday! "Taken" Movie Poster
"TAKEN Poster." Movieposter.com. N.p., n.d. Web. 07 Feb. 2017. <https://www.movieposter.com/poster/MPW-38536/Taken.html>. Today in class we just worked on our scripts. Since at home I finished my script of the scene from Taken, so I spent the first few minutes editing it, and then began working on my own script. I am keeping the same plot, but changing the scene, characters and a few details to make it more of a western style. For example, instead of being set in a mansion, it is set in an old bar and the middle of the woods. Instead of the bodyguards dressed in all black, they are dressed in cowboy clothing. I have also been playing around with "cowboy language" and adding certain sayings into my script. I researched online a bit and some of the sayings are very interesting, but they defiantly add to the film and make it more western. I am around halfway done with the first draft of my script. So far I am happy with it, although I want to try and go back and change the plot a bit so it is less like the one of Taken. Overall, I am very happy with the work I got done in todays class and can't wait to continue working on it!
Last class we learnt about Misè En Scene, which I used to write a film review on instead of writing a reflection. You can access it through the link bar! Our most recent class we learnt specifically about western films, and the iconography of them, what makes a western film, a western film. We also learnt about genres in general and how they came to be. I found learning about iconography very interesting because I had never learnt about it before, and was surprised that genres in film isn't that old, since it was only created in the 20th century. At the end of class we started to generate ideas of which film scene we are going to use as a guide for our script. I knew for my movie I wanted there to be fight scenes involved, as there is usually in a western movie. The first film I thought of was a film I saw last summer, Taken. I really enjoyed this movie when I watched it, and it contains many fight scenes, so it seemed perfect. I researched some scenes from it and ended up choosing one of the scenes where he is trying to find his daughter. This I think will work well for me when I am making my own script, because I have an idea of how I can make it into the western genre. I have finished writing up the original script from Taken and I am excited to start my own script soon!
