"Maverick - Mel Gibson Plays Poker with Jodie Foster 1994." YouTube. "Riki Texas on Youtube", 22 July 2014. Web. 18 Jan. 2017. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrUOD4i8sOQ>. The clip I have chosen to analyse is a clip from the modern western film "The Maverick". It was released in 1994. I chose this movie because I read some reviews on it and it interested me, I searched for clips from the movie and found this one. This is a scene set in a bar where people are gambling. A man called Bret Maverick comes into the bar and joins a game. I liked this particular scene because it implements parts of comedy into it, which made it more interesting. One of the comedic parts is when the main character agrees to lose the game for 2 hours, and at one point he shows his cards to everyone intentionally to poke fun at his situation, but then quickly hides them. (1) I think that this is a way that studios used to make western films more interesting, by implementing parts of a different genre but still keeping the iconography of a western film. 1 (Maverick - Mel Gibson plays poker with Jodie Foster 1994, Youtube, 0:49) Some elements of the iconography of the western genre that I can see in this clip are the costumes of the characters. The costumes are western, as I can tell by the fact most of the men at the table are wearing cowboy hats (2) and the western costume the lady is wearing. (3) They are also located in a bar, which is an iconic location for western films. Additionally, all the characters speak in the "cowboy language" and have the American, southern accent in their voices. Furthermore, the main character, Brett Maverick, is very confident and shows small features of a protagonist, which are common features of main characters in western films. Although Maverick is more relaxed than the regular main character in a western film, he still has the elements of that character in him. He is sure of his word and speaks with confidence. Although this scene is a modern version of a western film and there is no iconic shootout where the good guy gets rid of the bad guy, you can still tell that it is inspired by a western film by the iconography elements in it. I thought that this was very interesting to see after watching some older western films and to see how much it has evolved over time.
